PhD in Mathematics

This doctorate readies students for work in universities or industry and gives them the chance to join faculty research across pure and applied areas. Students complete sixteen term courses selected to give breadth and command of tools for their research area. A comprehensive exam is due by the end of year two and a qualifying exam by the end of year three. The final stage is a dissertation of original research followed by an oral exam. Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in mathematics or a similar field. Doctoral students work closely with faculty advisors throughout, moving from structured coursework toward independent scholarship and a final dissertation. Prospective applicants should consult the program page and the relevant school admissions pages for current requirements, deadlines and tuition, since those details are not given on the program page.
