The Juris Doctor at Boston University School of Law is a full-time daytime curriculum lasting three academic years. Every new student starts in the fall, and the degree must be finished within five years even if leaves of absence are taken.
Incoming students are placed in sections that take classes together, and each also joins a mixed Lawyering course with small groups. First-year subjects include civil procedure, constitutional law, property law and the Lawyering program, covering written legal analysis, research and a moot court. First-years also experience appellate advocacy by researching, writing a brief and arguing before a panel of faculty and students.
Graduates are expected to know substantive and procedural law, analyze and research legal questions, write and speak persuasively, understand their professional and ethical duties, and demonstrate collaboration, counseling and negotiation.
