PGCert in Special Education and Teaching

The ESCP at Long Beach prepares candidates to teach students with disabilities, in either the Mild/Moderate Support Needs area, the Extensive Support Needs area, or both. Finishing the program leads to a state teaching credential issued by the credentialing commission. The Mild/Moderate credential authorizes holders to assess access to the curriculum, teach, and provide special education support for students with conditions such as autism, learning disabilities and brain injury, from kindergarten through age 22 and in adult classes. Several routes exist. A traditional post-baccalaureate route suits those who hold or will soon hold a bachelor's degree. An intern route is for degree holders who have a teaching position with a partner district. Juniors and seniors may enter through the undergraduate Liberal Studies pathway. An advising center holds information sessions for prospective students.
