Overview

The School Counseling program combines a master's degree with the Pupil Personnel Services Credential. It trains counselors to serve as advocates for social justice and change makers within city schools and varied multicultural communities. The curriculum rests on the ASCA National Model, a balanced approach attending to school achievement, career readiness and emotional wellbeing for K-12 students. Trainees learn to use data-informed decisions and evidence-based practice to bring about change across systems. Students complete the master's and the credential at the same time, and a fieldwork component provides hands-on experience. Outcomes include delivering direct services at multiple tiers, including one-on-one and small-group counseling, advising on coursework and classroom lessons, and collaborating with families, teachers, administrators and community leaders. Admission is for fall only, and the application closes earlier than in most other programs in the college.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Cal State Apply application, statement of purpose and MyCED program application; fall admission only.
