Overview

The Master of Arts in History builds research skills and credentials for careers in teaching, scholarship, archives, museums and libraries. Students explore many periods and methods, with faculty who specialize in United States and European history, plus professors from the neighbouring colleges. Concentrations cover American, early modern, European and global or comparative history. Master's students learn alongside doctoral students and can draw on the large libraries of the Claremont Colleges and the nearby Huntington Library. Requirements include a thesis based on original research and reading proficiency in one foreign language, with French or German for European studies. The Oral History Program, begun in the 1960s, is a distinctive resource for research on California and Claremont history, and students may draw on it for projects. Study takes about two years, starting in spring or fall.
