AA/AS in Communication and Media Studies

The Communication Studies offering centers on spoken expression, argument and persuasion. Students can take the speech and debate course, SPCH 160B, which doubles as a competitive team that travels to intercollegiate tournaments. Coursework builds skills in research, critical thinking and building a case, with coaches working closely alongside members. The group gathers weekly in the Applied Arts Building, and newcomers are welcome without any prior experience, just an interest in trying. The department lists the Communication Studies AST among its associate degrees, a transfer-focused credential. Graduates can use the training to strengthen a resume, move on to a four-year university, or develop confidence in any career that depends on clear communication. The program also gives students a community of motivated peers who share an interest in public speaking and discussion.
