PhD in International/Globalization Studies

This doctorate is an interdisciplinary degree uniting geography, sociocultural anthropology and sociology. Every student receives interdisciplinary training and then focuses on one of the three disciplines. Early coursework covers theory, methods and proposal writing through a shared core. Each student then declares a single major, takes the corresponding theory and methods courses and at least two discipline seminars, and writes a dissertation under the guidance of a professor in that discipline. As they progress, students increasingly follow their own interests through electives in the department and elsewhere, working with a faculty committee on the dissertation. The program trains researchers who can work across disciplinary boundaries and conduct original fieldwork or analysis. Students may transfer credits earned in the department's master's program, subject to the stated limits, and work with faculty advisors throughout.
