The statistics doctorate offers advanced instruction in probability, inference, Bayesian methods, reliability, linear models, and the analysis of time series, along with the role of statistics in legal and regulatory policy. It balances theory with application and works for full-time and part-time students, since most graduate classes meet early in the evening.
Each student pursues original research with faculty in a chosen specialty. Almost every graduate has landed a job across the statistics and data science fields, including at large technology and financial firms.
Entering students usually arrive with graduate training in statistics or an allied subject and need a solid mathematics background spanning linear algebra, advanced calculus, and mathematical statistics. A written qualifying examination must be taken within twenty-four months of enrollment, and further credits are chosen with the doctoral committee. The program is STEM designated.
