AA/AS in Anthropology

Anthropology at Merritt College looks at how human societies differ and what they share. Students look at how communities on several continents have developed different cultural strategies for adapting to their environments. Other social sciences tend to look at narrow slices of human life, whereas anthropology here combines culture, society, biology and communication, from early human evolution to the present. Students build critical analysis skills aimed at global citizenship. The department offers an Associate in Arts for Transfer in the subject, written to satisfy the lower division requirements for anthropology and similar majors in the California State University system. Coursework can also support study in medicine, nursing, sociology, business, communications, education and other fields, and the page lists careers ranging from community service to cultural resource management.
