AA/AS in Sociology

The Sociology Department at Merritt College helps students understand how society works, from small personal interactions to the operation of large institutions. Students study sociological theory, key concepts and research methods that apply to relationships and careers in fields such as commerce, government, justice, health, farming and media. That knowledge can make them stronger candidates for sociology-related jobs or lay groundwork for a bachelor's degree in sociology or a related social science. Two degrees are listed: an A.A. in Social and Behavioral Sciences and a transfer-focused AA in sociology, which meets first- and second-year requirements for sociology and similar majors in the California State University system. Faculty profiles on the program page describe an approach grounded in community-based research and organizing. Students who are new to the college can begin through the welcome center and its application guide.
