AA/AS in Computer Science

Computer Science at MiraCosta College is designed for students heading toward more advanced study elsewhere. The subject looks at computing and its uses, with areas of focus ranging from low-level system software to machine intelligence, robots, network design and computer graphics. To prepare for transfer, students learn programming fundamentals, data structures and computer architecture. Those aiming at a computer science major should expect to complete additional mathematics, including calculus and discrete mathematics, with the exact amount depending on the receiving university. Typical destinations are software development, computer engineering, systems analysis, database administration and managing software projects. The program sits in the Math and Sciences division, and a separate department covers computer studies and information technology for students who want applied or career-focused courses. Prospective students can meet a counselor to plan the sequence that matches their chosen transfer destination.
