Program details

Overview

Cuyamaca College offers this American Sign Language associate degree for students who want strong signing and comprehension abilities and a closer look at Deaf culture. Coursework includes four levels of signing, fingerspelling and a course on Deaf culture, plus a one-unit elective such as signing with infants or school-age children. The emphasis is on paraprofessional work and further study, and graduates may continue toward interpreter certification, further ASL or Deaf Studies coursework, or a university. Students should meet with a counselor to confirm prerequisites, decide the order of classes and see how the units count toward other certificates or degrees at the college. Careful sequencing helps people finish in a reasonable time while balancing work and other commitments.
