Program details

Overview

Stanford's STS program gives students an interdisciplinary framework for understanding how science and technology interact with society. All students begin with a common core drawn from the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, physical sciences and engineering. They then pursue one of seven specialised areas. Examples include Catastrophic Risks and Solutions, Politics and Policy, and how data and information behave socially, while others cover communication, innovation, life sciences and health, or a self-designed path. Each student completes a capstone, either a senior seminar or an honors thesis, and shows mastery in one humanities or social science field and one science or engineering field. Majors may declare either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. Further program details are published in the Stanford Bulletin.
