Classics majors investigate the ancient Greek and Roman worlds by way of their languages, writings, art and material remains. Reading ranges from epic poetry and philosophy to the Christian scriptures, always set against the wider history and culture of the ancient Mediterranean.
Alongside Greek and Latin instruction, the department teaches critical reading of literature, cultural analysis and historical study. Topics include archaeology, ancient art and theater, myth, humor, cultural exchange, poetry in translation, politics, warfare, and the experience of enslaved people, sexuality and ethnicity in antiquity.
The department sends students abroad to Greece, Italy, the United Kingdom and other European locations, has placed some on excavations in Turkey, and funds scholarships for overseas study tied to the ancient world. The same page describes both the arts and general studies versions of the major.
