PhD in Physics

Graduate study in physics at Miami puts research first, while treating teaching as an essential part of the training. Thesis topics are available in several areas, among them astrophysics, cosmology, condensed matter, particle theory and plasma physics, as well as ocean and atmospheric optics and complexity. Applicants send Graduate Record Examination scores, including the Advanced Test in Physics, together with their application. Doctoral candidates complete a set of 500- and 600-level physics courses, among them named core courses plus further lecture courses. Master's candidates face limits on reading and seminar credit and may earn some credit through thesis work. For either degree, students sit a comprehensive examination every year and get two attempts to pass. Courses taken in other departments need the graduate advisor's approval.
