This graduate degree from the Sam Fox School suits artists who want an interdisciplinary setting for serious inquiry into contemporary practice. The curriculum aims to prepare students for many kinds of careers in art and culture rather than a single route, and it draws on the resources of a large research university.
The program lasts two years, or four semesters, and students live and work in St. Louis. Every student is assigned a private loft-style studio and presents work in an exhibition each semester. The final requirement is a thesis show held in the university art museum named for Mildred Lane Kemper. St. Louis functions as a second studio, and the surrounding region offers further galleries and arts centers for showing work. A summer in Berlin is also available through the Sommerakademie.
Financial support includes scholarships, among them full-tuition awards, plus fellowships, paid assistantships and loans. Funds for production, travel and research are also listed.
