This one-year certificate, open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners alike, explores the worldviews, community practices and perspectives of Inuit, Métis and First Nations peoples, with an emphasis on the contributions of Indigenous peoples to the land now called Canada. Students consider what learning from the land involves, what it means to act as an ally, and develop a grounded understanding of the ongoing effects of colonialism within Canadian society.
Working with peers and Indigenous community members, students build skills centred on responsibility, respect, relationality and reciprocity, exploring contexts connected to truth, reconciliation and cultural resurgence. Course topics span arts and culture, language revitalisation, self-determination, legal traditions, community well-being, and environmental stewardship. Graduates can move directly into related employment within Indigenous community organisations and businesses, or across public, private, non-profit and government bodies that work with Indigenous communities, or continue on to a related two-year diploma with credit for the first year already completed.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: College Eligibility requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or Mature Student status for applicants 19 or older without a diploma. Program Eligibility adds Grade 12 English (ENG4C or equivalent). International applicants must meet Algonquin's English Language Proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic overall band 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band, the Duolingo English Test at 110 overall with no component below 95, or TOEFL iBT at the score Algonquin publishes for the test's current format. Where qualified applicants exceed available places, Algonquin selects on English proficiency alone; no minimum GPA is published.
Application Details
Start Date:Fall
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: for September 2027 entry the application portal opens 26 September 2026, the equal consideration date is 1 February 2027, and offers must be accepted by 1 May 2027, while later applications are still assessed as space allows; Algonquin publishes no separate equal-consideration date for the January 2027 intake. International applicants apply directly via Algonquin's own International Application Portal, not ontariocolleges.ca; instead of one fixed date the college posts a program-by-program closing-date list shortly before each term starts - for Fall 2026 most programs closed 16 September 2026, technology programs by 9-10 September; no Winter 2027 or Fall 2027 international list has been posted yet, so admission remains effectively rolling until each list is published and fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
