This in-school apprenticeship program (Trade 313A) trains registered refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic apprentices at Algonquin College's ACCE campus. In-school training is delivered as three 8-week class and lab sessions (24 weeks total), each followed by 8 to 12 months of on-the-job work with a sponsoring employer. Coursework covers thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, psychrometrics, electromagnetism, mechanical cooling cycles and components, electrical installation procedures, pneumatics, hydronics, and construction health and safety. Graduates learn to solve routine refrigeration and air conditioning problems, identify mechanical and electrical system failures in residential, industrial, commercial and institutional settings, select and use trade hand tools and test equipment, and assist with installation and start-up of systems under the supervision of a certified technician. Completion of all three levels satisfies the in-school training requirement toward Red Seal certification as a refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic.
