Program details
Overview
Hispanic Studies at Bishop's University is a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Major offered by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities. Courses are taught entirely in Spanish and cover Hispanic language, linguistics, literature, culture, and civilization, with instruction alternating between coursework focused on Spain and on Spanish America. Students build advanced Spanish-language proficiency alongside a critical understanding of Hispanic history, society, and cultural production, and are encouraged to complete a semester abroad in a Spanish-speaking country such as Spain, Argentina, or Mexico as part of the program. The program admits students each Fall and Winter term and is open to applicants from high school, CEGEP, another university, or outside Canada. Graduates are prepared for careers such as translator, interpreter, language teacher, diplomatic agent, journalist, immigration paralegal, and international logistics coordinator, among other roles drawing on cross-cultural and Spanish-language competency.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is assessed by applicant category. CEGEP students who have completed or are completing a DEC may apply regardless of the DEC's field of study, with no specific prerequisite courses required; the estimated minimum admission average is a 24 global R-Score (25 R-Score for School of Education programs). Canadian high school applicants from outside Quebec must complete five Grade 12 level university-preparatory courses, including Grade 12 level English, three Approved courses, and one further Approved or Option course; required and approved courses vary by province. International, IB, transfer, mature-student, and other applicant categories have their own published requirements. All applicants must submit a recent transcript, and CEGEP applicants must also provide their Quebec permanent code. Meeting the posted minimum does not guarantee admission, as applications are evaluated competitively when demand exceeds available spaces.
