Overview

French as a Second Language at Bishop's University is a Certificate offered by the Department d'Études françaises et québécoises in the Faculty of Humanities. The one-year, undergraduate-level program is designed to develop and enhance French-language skills for students at all levels, from beginners to more advanced speakers. It admits students in both the Fall and Winter terms and is open to applicants from high school, CEGEP, another university, or outside Canada. As a certificate, it can be taken as a stand-alone credential or combined with another program of study at Bishop's, allowing students to strengthen their French proficiency without committing to a full degree. Full course requirements are detailed in the university's Academic Calendar. Given Bishop's location in Quebec, the program gives students a practical route to functional French skills for academic, professional, or everyday use in a French-speaking environment.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission is assessed by applicant category. CEGEP students who have completed or are completing a DEC may apply regardless of the DEC's field of study, with no specific prerequisite courses required; the estimated minimum admission average is a 24 global R-Score (25 R-Score for School of Education programs). Canadian high school applicants from outside Quebec must complete five Grade 12 level university-preparatory courses, including Grade 12 level English, three Approved courses, and one further Approved or Option course; required and approved courses vary by province. International, IB, transfer, mature-student, and other applicant categories have their own published requirements. All applicants must submit a recent transcript, and CEGEP applicants must also provide their Quebec permanent code. Meeting the posted minimum does not guarantee admission, as applications are evaluated competitively when demand exceeds available spaces.
