Overview
Hispanic Studies at Bishop's University is a Certificate offered by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities. The one-year, undergraduate-level program develops proficiency in Spanish alongside knowledge of the history, literature, and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. It admits students in both the Fall and Winter terms and is open to applicants from high school, CEGEP, another university, or outside Canada. As a certificate rather than a full degree, it can be completed as a stand-alone credential or alongside another program of study, giving students language and cultural competency without the time commitment of a full major. Full course requirements are set out in the university's Academic Calendar. Graduates gain the Spanish-language proficiency and cultural background useful for roles in translation, interpretation, education, international relations, and other fields that draw on bilingual or cross-cultural communication skills.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is assessed by applicant category. CEGEP students who have completed or are completing a DEC may apply regardless of the DEC's field of study, with no specific prerequisite courses required; the estimated minimum admission average is a 24 global R-Score (25 R-Score for School of Education programs). Canadian high school applicants from outside Quebec must complete five Grade 12 level university-preparatory courses, including Grade 12 level English, three Approved courses, and one further Approved or Option course; required and approved courses vary by province. International, IB, transfer, mature-student, and other applicant categories have their own published requirements. All applicants must submit a recent transcript, and CEGEP applicants must also provide their Quebec permanent code. Meeting the posted minimum does not guarantee admission, as applications are evaluated competitively when demand exceeds available spaces.
