Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate

Admission Requirements: One of English 12 at C+ or the Camosun English 12 alternative at C; one of Anatomy and Physiology 12 at C or its Camosun alternative at C; and one of MOA 155 at C+ or a medical terminology course of at least 60 hours passed at C+ or better. All of the following are also required: Grade 12 graduation or its equivalent, the completed Physical Requirements online form, attendance at a Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant information session (an online option exists) with the follow-up questionnaire, and keyboarding at 40 words per minute over a five-minute test. Camosun notes that Grade 12 graduation is a condition of employment under the HEU and BCGEU job descriptions used by B.C. health authorities and private laboratories, which is why it is required rather than recommended. A seven-week clinical practicum is part of the programme, with placements across Vancouver Island and shifts that can fall on days, evenings or weekends. Camosun sets aside priority seats for qualified Indigenous applicants in its Health Sciences and Human Services programmes for part of each year, under a process approved by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS must clear Camosun's general college English standard on top of anything listed here — IELTS Academic 6.0 with no sub-score under 6.0, TOEFL iBT 78 with no sub-score under 19, PTE Academic 54 with no sub-score under 50, Cambridge C1 Advanced 174 with no sub-score under 169, or CAEL CE 60 with no component under 60, taken within the past two years — because the college states that its general standard applies even where a programme page shows a lower one.
