Program details

Overview

The diploma is a continuous, comprehensive course of study in core sonographic competencies together with one of three specialty streams: general, cardiac or vascular. Learning is applied and authentic, set in hospital and clinic environments, with workplace competency validated during community-based clinical practicums. Students draw on human anatomy, medical terminology and underlying physics to produce cross-sectional body images, and graduates go on to produce static and dynamic images using sound waves, a radiation-free method considered among the safest ways to image the body.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Competitive entry with academic and non-academic components. Academic: English 12 at B or the Camosun English 12 alternative at B; Pre-calculus 12 at B, or MATH 100 or MATH 108 at B, or the Camosun Math 12 alternative at B; Physics 11 at B or its Camosun alternative at B; and Anatomy and Physiology 12 at B, or BIOL 150 at B, or BIOL 152 with BIOL 153 at B, or PNUR 101 at B, or the Camosun alternative at B. Non-academic, all required: the completed Physical Requirements online form, attendance at a Diagnostic Medical Sonography information session (an online version is available) with the follow-up questionnaire, and a completed Program Preparedness Profile. Selection ranks applicants first on the average GPA of the prerequisite courses, then scores the Program Preparedness Profiles of the strongest, and offers seats on the combined total. Offers are conditional on finishing the programme participation requirements before classes begin. A short waitlist covers the same intake year only; anyone who misses a seat must reapply for a later year. Camosun sets aside priority seats for qualified Indigenous applicants in its Health Sciences and Human Services programmes for part of each year, under a process approved by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS must clear Camosun's general college English standard on top of anything listed here — IELTS Academic 6.0 with no sub-score under 6.0, TOEFL iBT 78 with no sub-score under 19, PTE Academic 54 with no sub-score under 50, Cambridge C1 Advanced 174 with no sub-score under 169, or CAEL CE 60 with no component under 60, taken within the past two years — because the college states that its general standard applies even where a programme page shows a lower one.

Application Details

Start Date: One start a year, in May (Summer term) — unusual for Camosun, whose other competitive health programmes start in September.
Application Deadline: Competitive-entry programme with its own fixed dates, not the college-wide schedule. For the Summer 2027 intake the application period ran 15 May to 15 August 2026 with the document deadline on 15 September 2026; Camosun's competitive-entry table gives the same recurring window of 15 May to 15 August with documents by 15 September, so a later intake follows the same months. Applications are ranked first on the average GPA of the prerequisite courses, then on the Program Preparedness Profile, and seats are conditional on completing the programme participation requirements before the start date. A short waitlist covers the same year only. These are the dates Camosun publishes for the programme; they are not split by applicant type, so international applicants should confirm with International Admissions before relying on the general international deadlines. Domestic and international applicants both apply online through EducationPlannerBC (apply.educationplannerbc.ca/camosun).
