This program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Linguistics, delivered on campus in Ottawa. Linguistics is studied as the scientific analysis of language, and coursework spans how language is represented in the brain, human-computer interaction, clinical applications, language acquisition, and the evolutionary origins of language. Students can add a concentration in Computer Science, Neuroscience, or Psychology to the core linguistics curriculum, aligning the degree with a related technical or clinical interest. The Department of Linguistics and Language Studies also offers a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and a separate Bachelor of Science in Psycholinguistics and Communication Differences for students whose interests lie elsewhere in the field. Carleton's linguistics faculty carry out research across both theoretical and applied areas of the discipline. The BSc route suits students drawn to the cognitive, computational, or clinical sides of language study rather than a purely humanities approach, and it provides a foundation for graduate study or work in areas such as speech-language pathology, computational linguistics, and language technology.
