The Master of Arts in Linguistics at Carleton University, offered by the School of Linguistics and Language Studies, provides a grounding in the core areas of theoretical linguistics through an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on interfaces between subdomains of linguistics and allied fields such as cognitive science, French, language acquisition, language documentation, and psycholinguistics. Most courses are taught by faculty cross-appointed in other units, and students may take graduate courses in related areas across the university. The School also offers a Graduate Diploma in Linguistics, a PhD in Linguistics, and an MA and PhD in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, and exceptional applicants may be considered for direct entry into the PhD program. Students choose from research essay or thesis pathways over a nominal two years of full-time study, delivered in person with a Fall intake, based in Ottawa. Graduates pursue further graduate study and careers drawing on research and teaching opportunities developed during the program.
