The Master of Arts in Linguistics (Applied) and Discourse Studies at Carleton University is housed in the School of Linguistics and Language Studies and emphasizes the central role language plays in educational, workplace, community, and other social contexts. Students draw on one or both of the fields of Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies to suit their own study and research goals, a combination the program describes as unique in North America since the two fields are typically housed separately at other universities. The program includes courses and a practicum leading to Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Ontario certification, and offers Collaborative Specializations in African Studies and Digital Humanities. Students choose from coursework, research essay, or thesis pathways, with a nominal full-time length of one to two years, delivered in person with a Fall intake. Based in Ottawa, the program provides teaching and research opportunities with government, education, and non-profit organizations, and prepares graduates for careers and further study in applied linguistics and discourse-related fields.
