Physical Geography at Carleton University examines the natural environment, from individual grains of sand to the entire planet, focusing on the complex interactions among Earth's environmental systems: the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. The program draws on chemistry, mathematics, physics, soil science, hydrology, geomorphology, glaciology, meteorology and biogeography to analyze and manage human-environment interactions. Coursework covers climate change, water resources, natural resource management, ecosystem science, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and statistical analysis. A Bachelor of Arts concentration in Physical Geography is also available alongside the Bachelor of Science program.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to these Bachelor of Science (Honours) programs requires the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with six Grade 12 U or M courses that include Advanced Functions and two of Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, or Physics, as for other Honours Science programs. For Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Geomatics, Integrated Science, and Physical Geography specifically, Calculus and Vectors may be substituted for Advanced Functions. For Environmental Science, a 4U course in both Biology and Chemistry is additionally recommended. Advanced standing beyond first year is assessed on merit and requires the applicant to normally be Eligible to Continue in their year level and meet the university's CGPA thresholds. The overall admission average is set each year on a program-by-program basis; holding the stated minimum only establishes eligibility for consideration, and because enrolment is limited, actual cut-off averages are typically higher.
