The Doctor of Philosophy in Physics is a research-based doctoral degree involving a substantial original research project that builds on graduate coursework in the field. Candidates specialize in one of two research streams: Particle Physics or Medical Physics. The Medical Physics stream is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP), preparing graduates for certification as clinical medical physicists. Particle Physics students conduct research in collaboration with national and international laboratories on topics in experimental and theoretical particle physics. Doctoral students complete required coursework before advancing to independent dissertation research under the supervision of a faculty advisor. The program admits students for the Fall, Winter and Summer terms. Graduates are prepared for research careers in academia, government laboratories and, for the Medical Physics stream, clinical medical physics practice in hospital settings.
