Program details

Overview

Techniques de travail social (code 388.A1) is a Diploma of College Studies (DEC) offered by Cegep de l'Abitibi-Temiscamingue at its Rouyn-Noranda campus, training social work technicians. The program includes employment-based internships and has no specific secondary-school subject prerequisite. Students learn to build and carry out intervention plans with individuals, groups, families, and communities, at times in crisis situations, to analyze complex social or family situations, and to support people facing poverty, violence, addiction, or isolation, as well as to help sustain the autonomy of older adults. Typical workplaces include integrated health and social services centres (CISSS), youth centres, rehabilitation centres, local community service centres (CLSC), long-term care centres (CHSLD), community organizations, shelters, carrefours jeunesse-emploi, family and youth houses, suicide-prevention and crisis centres, and primary and secondary schools. Graduates work as social work technicians, or in roles focused on addiction, youth, or elder support, probation, or street and outreach work. The program suits students who connect easily with new people, want to see the tangible effect of guidance and support, act with empathy and altruism, and can read personality and behaviour to understand others' situations.
