Program details

Overview

Techniques d'hygiène dentaire is a technical program leading to a Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC, program 111.B0) over six terms at Collège de Maisonneuve, the only cégep on the island of Montreal to offer it. The program prepares students to apply scientific methods of oral-disease prevention and control, including scaling and polishing, care-plan development, and dental radiography, and to assess patients' oral health, teach oral-hygiene practices, and perform techniques such as digital radiology, orthodontic and prosthodontic procedures (whitening trays, mouthguards), and restorative dentistry. Theoretical coursework covers dental anatomy, biology, oral pathology, nutrition, communication, and practice management. Clinical training is central to the program: students complete two types of placements, including a structured clinical stage in public dental health, using the college's on-site teaching clinic, which is equipped with digital imaging, intraoral cameras, and computerized scheduling systems. Some students may also have the opportunity to complete an international clinical placement, such as in Switzerland or Belgium, or a placement with an Indigenous community in Quebec. Graduates are prepared to practise as dental hygienists, a profession regulated in Quebec by the Ordre des hygiénistes dentaires du Québec (OHDQ). The program suits students drawn to hands-on clinical health care work with a strong scientific foundation.
