Dental Hygiene Technology is a technical Diploma of College Studies (DEC technique) offered at Cegep de Chicoutimi. The program develops the knowledge and skills needed to play a role in both oral and general population health, working alongside dentists in settings such as community health clinics to support prevention, screening, and preventive and therapeutic dental care. From the second year, students treat clients directly at the college's teaching clinic in a setting modelled on professional practice, providing services such as oral exams, X-rays, cleanings, whitening, fillings, and pit-and-fissure sealants. In Quebec, dental hygienists have been able to open an independent practice since 2020, giving graduates a path toward professional autonomy beyond working under a dentist. Admission Requirements: Admission requires a Quebec Secondary School Diploma (DES) meeting Cegep de Chicoutimi's general conditions: Langue d'enseignement and Langue seconde at Secondary V, Mathematiques at Secondary IV, Science et technologie (or Applications technologiques et scientifiques) at Secondary IV, and Histoire et education a la citoyennete at Secondary IV; candidates missing units may be admitted conditionally and must complete upgrading courses in their first session. Equivalent routes are also accepted: a vocational diploma (DEP) plus the same three core courses, training judged equivalent by the college, or sufficient formation and experience combined with at least 36 months away from full-time study. On top of these general conditions, this programme requires Science et technologie de l'environnement or Sciences et environnement at Secondary IV (Sciences physiques 436 for diplomas earned before June 2010). Because clinical placements are supervised by the CIUSSS, admitted students must provide proof of primary immunisation at registration (Quebec does not mandate vaccination, so a declining student may instead sign a waiver) and undergo a confidentiality undertaking and criminal record check for public-health internships. Graduates must join the Ordre des hygienistes dentaires du Quebec to practise. No language test score, portfolio, or interview is published for this programme.
