Overview

The Educational Assistant program at Columbia Bible College is a certificate offered in part-time and full-time formats on the Abbotsford, British Columbia campus, preparing students to support children and youth who need assistance in the learning process. The part-time format totals 14 credits: 12 credits of classroom coursework plus a 2-credit practicum. A full-time dual-certificate option combines the Educational Assistant Certificate with the college's Columbia One program and is completed within ten months. Practicum placements take place in elementary, middle, and secondary school settings, and a criminal record check is required before placement. The program suits career-changers seeking a recognized qualification to work as an educational assistant, as well as recent high school graduates drawn to the dual-certificate option, which combines Bible college coursework with job-ready skills in a single program. Graduates go on to work as educational assistants in private schools and in some public-school districts.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 60.00 / %
Admission Requirements: The Educational Assistant programme page does not publish its own admission requirements and refers applicants to Columbia Bible College's general admissions process, so the requirements below are drawn from the college's own admissions page. Applicants to the Educational Assistant certificate must be at least 17 years of age, hold a Canadian or US high school diploma with a minimum 60% average across their top five Grade 11-12 classes (three of which must be academic courses), demonstrate potential for academic and community success, affirm a Christian faith commitment and agree to Columbia's Student Community Commitments. In place of the general two-reference requirement, Educational Assistant applicants must supply both a child-and-youth reference and a character reference, each submitted on a reference form. International applicants must show English proficiency of TOEFL 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based), or an IELTS Academic score of 6.5, tested at least two months before the semester begins. A criminal record check through the Ministry of Justice must be completed before the practicum placement. The college admits for September and January entry.
