The Creative Writing Associate Degree covers the theory and practice of writing poetry, plays, fiction and related genres, taught through a face-to-face workshop model. Students may take further courses in genres such as poetry, writing for young adults, digital storytelling and memoir writing, and graduate with a portfolio of work. The credential is a 60-credit, two-year Associate of Arts Degree with a specialization in Creative Writing, offered through the Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts at Douglas College, with admission under Open Enrolment - General Admission Requirements. The specialization requires six Creative Writing courses in addition to the degree's general education requirements, with faculty advisors assisting with course planning. An optional Co-operative Education designation alternates study semesters with paid work terms. Admission Requirements: Admission follows Douglas College's Open Enrolment - General Admission Requirements: applicants must satisfy at least one of the General Admission criteria (British Columbia secondary school graduation or equivalent; one course short of that graduation; being 19 or older by the end of the first month of the first semester attended; being 17 on the first day of that semester with at least a year out of school; or completion of a special-needs programme certificate after 12 years of schooling, or an Evergreen or Leaving School Certificate) and the College's English Language Proficiency requirement (for example IELTS Academic overall 6.5, TOEFL iBT 83, CAEL overall and essay 60, Duolingo English Test overall 110, or PTE Academic overall 56). Applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, selecting the programme option "Arts - Associate Degree"; the application fee is CAD 39.65 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents and CAD 100 for international applicants. Domestic applications are accepted for the Winter, Summer and Fall terms, with Fall applications opening 1 October of the prior year; international applicants should check the College's international application deadline page for term availability.
