Overview
The RN Mental Health Nursing Certificate is a self-paced, online, instructor-supported program offered through Douglas College Continuing Education that prepares Registered Nurses to work in mental health settings. Coursework builds skills in initiating and maintaining therapeutic relationships, assessing and planning client care, applying teaching and learning principles to mental health needs, and communicating clearly about a client's health status and response to treatment. A clinical component lets students apply their learning directly to practice, taking the form of either a clinical placement or a knowledge-transfer project depending on the student's existing experience and learning needs, as determined through an interview with Continuing Education faculty; the college notes that clinical placement arrangements are not available to students living outside Canada. Admission requires a letter of intent describing personal goals and how the program fits them, two references (at least one work-related in health care), and proof of completion of English 12 with a minimum "C" grade or equivalent test results. Each course has its own tuition fee rather than a single program cost. Students have up to 24 months to complete the program with the knowledge-transfer option, or up to 18 months with the clinical-placement option. Graduates receive a Douglas College Continuing Education program certificate in RN Mental Health Nursing, issued through the Office of the Registrar.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must submit to Continuing Education, Faculty of Health Sciences: a program application form; a current resume highlighting their education and experience as a Registered Nurse; proof of completion of a recognized RN education program; a letter of intent, of no more than one page, describing personal goals and vision for future practice and how the program aligns with them; two letters of reference, one of which must be healthcare-work-related and the other of which may be personal; a copy of current active RN registration; and proof of completion of English 12 with a minimum grade of C, or equivalent LPI test results with a score of 4 on all sections.
