Program details
Overview
This certificate in industrial automation at Polytechnique Montréal develops professional skills for understanding the physical phenomena underlying industrial systems and keeping up with technological developments in equipment such as programmable controllers, human-machine interfaces, and industrial instrumentation. Most courses are practice-based with laboratories, covering three areas: automation, which reduces human intervention in industrial production tasks; instrumentation, covering measurement, command, and process-control devices; and process supervision and management, covering the visualization and recording of measured and controlled values to improve quality and productivity. The certificate totals 30 credits, delivered part-time in the evening, fully online. It can be combined with two other eligible certificates toward a cumulative bachelor's degree in industrial production and performance. It is aimed at engineers and technical staff working in the electrical or industrial sector, including college graduates in electrical engineering technology or physical technology, and leads to roles such as control systems installation and maintenance specialist and senior industrial automation technician.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a Diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC), or a minimum of 21 completed credits from Polytechnique Montréal's certificate in Électricité du bâtiment, or an Attestation d'études collégiales (AEC) plus at least two years of relevant experience, or completion of a 1st-cycle microprogram in Automatisation industrielle, Technologie, or Technologies manufacturières (courses shared with this certificate) with a cumulative average of at least 2.0/4.0. Applicants must also meet the certificate-level French requirement (CEFR B2, proof required at application, exemptions apply) and must show prior training covering college-level mathematics equivalent to Polytechnique's courses Z-031 (algebra and trigonometry), Z-032 (vector calculus and complex numbers), and Z-033 (differential and integral calculus), plus college-level DC-circuit and AC-circuit courses. Where this background is missing, Polytechnique may impose the corresponding preparatory courses.
