Overview

The Automation Technician program is a 32-week, part-time certificate delivered fully online as distance education, leading to a George Brown College certificate. It covers digital and industrial electronics, hydraulics and pneumatics, process control, SCADA systems, and programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and robotics systems, examining applications in automated manufacturing. Instruction combines self-paced theory modules with laboratory simulations using LogixSim software, which bundles CircuitLogix Pro, RoboLogix, PLCLogix 5000 and 3D Lab tools for designing, testing and debugging control devices and automated equipment. The curriculum consists of 18 interactive modules combining text, animation and audio, followed by computer-based practice exercises and final exams, with no fixed completion deadline. The program requires a Windows-compatible computer, since the simulation software does not run on macOS, Chromebook or Linux systems. Graduates are prepared for roles such as automation technician, controls technician, process technician and robotics technician, and may continue into further certificates in electromechanics, PLCs or robotics.
