Program details

Overview

The Electric Vehicle (EV) Technician program is a 32-week, part-time certificate delivered fully online as distance education (asynchronous, self-paced), leading to a George Brown College certificate. It covers EV circuits, direct and alternating current systems, power electronics, batteries and fuel cells, battery charging systems, DC and AC motors and controls, powertrains, sensors and actuators, communication and control systems, and autonomous vehicles, across 14 modules. Instruction combines theory with virtual lab simulations using CircuitLogix software (2D and 3D), plus videos and real-world examples, and each module ends with an online exam. The program is aimed at Automotive Service Technicians with an internal-combustion background moving into EV service work, and at electricians installing or maintaining EV charging stations. It requires a Windows-compatible computer, since the simulation software does not run on macOS, Chromebook, or Linux systems. Graduates are prepared for roles such as EV technician, EV production technician, EV-specialized automotive service technician, and EV charger technician.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The academic prerequisites for students entering into the Electric Vehicle Technician program is a high school diploma, with credits at or above the general level or equivalent mature student status. A background in electronics, electrical, or internal combustion engine (ICE) powered vehicles is helpful but not necessary. If you are 19 years or older and do not have a high school diploma, you may enrol as a mature student.
