Overview

The Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Financial Services) is a four-year, on-campus degree delivered at George Brown Polytechnic's St. James Campus, developed with input from employers, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario, and FP Canada. After a common first year, students choose a specialization in either Accounting or Financial Planning. Coursework covers accounting, investment management, corporate finance, banking, business administration, and financial-planning theory, with an emphasis on applying these skills to real financial problems: preparing financial reports, analyzing data, assessing risk across economic, legal, and regulatory factors, and using statistical and business models. The program includes a required work-experience component totalling no less than fourteen weeks of full-time equivalent work, typically completed between the sixth and seventh semesters with partners drawn from financial institutions, accounting firms, government offices, and major corporations. It is delivered through George Brown's School of Accounting and Finance, part of a business program group that holds accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs. Graduates are positioned to pursue professional accounting or financial-planning designations and to enter roles across banking, corporate finance, and financial advisory work, making the program suited to students aiming for regulated financial-services careers rather than general business management.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Entry requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with six Grade 12 University (U) or University/College (M) courses; the programme's own page states that applicants are selected on the basis of academic achievement in the required courses and other published selection criteria, without itemising the exact subject grades in the material recovered, so applicants should also confirm the specific thresholds against George Brown's general degree-admission requirements. English proficiency is met through George Brown Polytechnic ESL Level 9, TOEFL iBT 84 overall with 21 in each skill band, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band, MELAB 85, or CAEL 70 overall with 60 in writing. George Brown notes that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
