The Honours Economics and Finance program brings together the Faculty of Arts and the Desautels Faculty of Management, combining economic theory with applied finance. Students build a theoretical framework for understanding resource allocation through economics courses while gaining an applied, real-world perspective through finance courses such as Investment Management and Applied Corporate Finance, alongside Introduction to Economic Theory: Honours and Advanced Economic Theory. As a joint degree spanning management and arts students, the program builds professional networks across both fields. Graduates pursue careers such as investment portfolio manager, asset manager, or financial services consultant, drawing on the combined analytical and applied skill set the program develops. Housed jointly in the Faculty of Arts and the Desautels Faculty of Management, the program gives students exposure to both humanities-style analytical training and management-school coursework within a single Honours degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Economics and Finance is a joint Honours program between the Faculty of Arts and the Desautels Faculty of Management, and applicants apply through the Faculty of Arts. Quebec CEGEP applicants need English 603 (or French 601 from a French CEGEP); Math I, II and III (or the equivalent New Science or Arts & Science DEC courses) are recommended, though not required, for the Honours and Joint Honours component in Economics that underlies this program, and any missing math course is added onto the McGill program after admission. For September 2026 entry, the Faculty of Arts sets a minimum overall R-Score of 27.5 and a minimum core English R-Score of 26.0. Admission is competitive and these minimums do not guarantee a place; missing recommended courses do not disqualify an otherwise-eligible applicant from consideration.
