Delivered in hybrid format at George Brown Polytechnic's St. James Campus, the Honours Bachelor of Food Studies is a four-year degree that pairs professional culinary training with a food-systems curriculum addressing sustainability, food security, equity, and policy. The program is described as the first of its kind in Canada to combine culinary arts with a comprehensive food-studies program. Alongside kitchen skills, students study communications, research methods, advocacy and movement building, systems thinking, policy analysis, grant writing, supply-chain and procurement logistics, and food history and culture. Experiential learning is central to the curriculum: students take field trips to meet food-sector professionals, complete two sixteen-hour community-engaged placements, and undertake a fourteen-week, four-hundred-and-twenty-hour work-integrated learning placement between their second and third years, arranged through the college's employer partnerships. The program is intended for students who want to work across the food system rather than solely in a kitchen, preparing them for roles spanning the culinary industry, education, tourism and recreation, public health, sustainability, economic development, agriculture, and food policy or research. Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with six Grade 12 University (U) or University/College (M) courses, including Grade 12 (U) English at 65 per cent or higher, and a combined average of 65 per cent or higher across the six courses; mature applicants aged 19 or older without an OSSD need the same Grade 12 (U) English course at 65 per cent or higher, with relevant post-secondary English courses considered. English proficiency for applicants without a qualifying secondary-school credential is met through George Brown Polytechnic ESL Level 9, TOEFL iBT 84 overall with 21 in each skill band, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band, MELAB 85, or CAEL 70 overall with 60 in writing. George Brown states that admission is subject to competition and that applicants may need grades or averages above the published minimums.
