Mechanical Techniques - Construction Boilermaker Apprenticeship is a certificate program at Humber Polytechnic that delivers the required in-school technical training for apprentices registered as Construction Boilermakers (program code 428A) with Skilled Trades Ontario. Training is delivered at the Centre for Skilled Trades & Technology on Humber's North Campus in Toronto, across three in-school levels, alternating with employer-sponsored, paid workplace training. Coursework covers the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of boilers, pressure vessels, tanks and piping systems, interpretation of technical drawings, workplace health and safety legislation, inspection and preventative maintenance techniques, and compliance with industry standards and contractual requirements. Apprentices also build communication, mathematical reasoning and teamwork skills needed to work safely at heights, in confined spaces and around complex industrial systems. Graduates work in power generation, oil refineries, steel mills, cement plants, pulp and paper facilities and hydroelectric stations. Each in-school block is scheduled by Skilled Trades Ontario, which issues an Offer of Classroom Training letter confirming the apprentice's place.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is not a direct application to Humber: applicants must first secure an employer willing to sponsor them as an apprentice and register with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, then register through Skilled Trades Ontario (STO). STO schedules apprentices for the in-school training portion and sends an Offer of Classroom Training letter confirming the block. Required preparation is Grade 12. Applicants typically work with their sponsoring employer for approximately one year before attending Humber. High school students in grade 11 or 12 may enter the trade through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).
