Overview

Paramedic is a technical DEC program preparing students to work within Quebec's emergency medical services system, covering both pre-hospital and in-hospital care. The program page describes training in patient assessment, transportation techniques, pharmacology, pre-hospital trauma life support, advanced cardiac life support, emergency vehicle operation, and crisis intervention, delivered through an integrated view of pre-hospital care. It notes a significant fieldwork or stage component placed in hospitals and ambulances, for which students must be fluently bilingual in English and French, and that a probationary driver's licence is required for admission. The college states it is the only CEGEP in Quebec offering this program in English. On completing the DEC, graduates may sit Quebec's provincial certification exam, the Programme national d'intégration clinique (PNIC), which the page says is required before an ambulance service in the province will hire them; once licensed, graduates can also work in other Canadian provinces. The page emphasizes that paramedic work involves sustained exposure to physical and emotional stress, including infectious disease, danger, and death, and asks students to prepare for that reality alongside technical skill-building. It suits candidates who are calm under pressure, physically capable, and drawn to frontline emergency patient care.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants need a Diplôme d'Études Secondaires including Secondary 5 Language of Instruction, Secondary 5 Second Language, Secondary 4 Mathematics, Secondary 4 Science and Technology (or Applied Science and Technology), and Secondary 4 History and Citizenship Education, or a Secondary School Vocational Diploma with Secondary 5 Language of Instruction, Secondary 5 Second Language and Secondary 4 Mathematics, or education the College deems equivalent. This program (SRAM code 181.A1) additionally requires at least a probationary driver's licence by the first day of semester 1, Canadian citizenship or landed-immigrant status, and passing a pre-admission physical test held before the March 1 SRAM deadline. Conditional acceptance is subject to a clean criminal-record check, a physician's medical examination, complete immunisation under the Québec Immunization Protocol for health-care workers, and obtaining a 4A driver's licence by the end of semester 5. The program requires fluency in both English and French, since hospital and ambulance fieldwork placements are conducted in both languages.
