Overview

The Journalism Diploma is open to students with or without previous post-secondary study and combines journalism, communications, and liberal arts coursework. A required core of introductory journalism and communications courses comes first, followed by a choice to concentrate in advanced journalism, advanced communications, or non-journalism subjects, with a required internship in the final term.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admissions to this diploma have been suspended as of the Fall (September) 2026 intake, until further notice, per the programme's own admissions page. Where the requirements otherwise apply: domestic applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent) or to be 19 or older, and international applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent). English proficiency is Category 2, Langara's baseline: English Studies 12/Literary Studies 12 at 50%, IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 (Writing 20, Reading 20, Listening 18, Speaking 18), Duolingo 110, CAEL 60, or PTE Academic 56. The department looks for strong English skills and demonstrated interest in journalism (writing, photography, video, web design, or published work), though no formal portfolio or interview is described; decisions were normally made in May, with some places held for applications after May 1.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC: for the 2027 entry cycle, applications open 1 February 2026 for Spring (January) entry, 1 June 2026 for Summer (May) entry and 1 October 2026 for Fall (September) entry, then stay open with no fixed closing date until each programme fills or classes begin.
