Program details
Overview
Professional Photography at Langara is a diploma combining the aesthetic and business sides of photography with technical training, with most assignments oriented toward commercial rather than fine-art photography. This commercial focus is meant to prepare students for the realities of the photographic industry, whether as employees or as entrepreneurs, and instruction covers both traditional and newer electronic and digital imaging techniques. Graduates have gone on to work as freelancers, photographer's assistants, digital imagers, or lab technicians.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants 19 or younger need a high-school diploma and transcripts (certified translations if not in English). English proficiency is met by Academic IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 (Reading/Writing 20, Listening/Speaking 18), BC English 12, LEAP Level 8, or LET Level 2. A faculty interview assesses the ability to communicate effectively verbally, visually and in writing. Applicants also submit a portfolio of their photography work, which may be a traditional printed portfolio, a website, an Instagram feed, or images hosted online; the page states there is no requirement for how many images the portfolio must contain or what its theme should be. The programme takes a September or January intake each year; fall applications open October 1 and should be complete by the preceding May.
