The Pre-Carpenter Certificate is a 15-week program for people with little or no experience in the carpentry trade, covering the first-year curriculum of a carpentry apprenticeship. Students learn foundational skills including job-site safety, common building materials, hand and power tool use, and blueprint reading, combining classroom instruction with hands-on, apprenticeship-style training. On successful completion, students are prepared to write the First Period Carpenter Apprentice exam, giving them a head start toward becoming a registered carpentry apprentice. Because the trade involves physical work, applicants should be comfortable lifting loads over 25 kilograms and have good physical coordination, manual dexterity, and mechanical aptitude, along with the ability to adapt to changing tasks on a job site. The program is not open to international students.
