Overview

The Agricultural Equipment Technician apprenticeship combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction over four years, leading to Journeyman certification. Students learn to diagnose electrical, mechanical and hydraulic problems and complete 6,240 hours of on-the-job training, alongside coursework in diesel engines, hydraulics, welding and precision farming systems. About 80 per cent of the programme is completed on the job with qualified technicians. Classroom training takes place in Lethbridge Polytechnic's Western Tractor Technology lab, which uses AGCO industry equipment through a partnership that made the institution the first in Canada with AGCO Advantage status. Apprentices attend eight weeks of classroom training each year in addition to on-the-job training, with a late-August start. The programme is not currently open to international students, and applicants apply through Alberta's MyTradesecrets system.
