BA/BS in Humanities I

Humanities I is a first-year entry point into Bachelor of Arts, Honours Bachelor of Arts, or Combined Honours Bachelor of Arts study in the humanities, examining the past and present through artistic, historical, critical, and philosophical lenses while building critical-thinking, evidence-evaluation, and communication skills. The first year combines mandatory humanities courses, gateway courses, and elective units drawn from across the university. In upper years, students can specialize in areas such as Greek and Roman studies, cognitive science of language, communication studies, English and cultural studies, French, global peace and social justice, history, justice and political philosophy and law, linguistics and languages, media arts, music, or philosophy, and concurrent certificates are available alongside the degree. Co-op and internship courses exist, including a paid Humanities Internship Program and field practicums in select disciplines, along with international exchange options in a number of countries. A commerce minor is available to select single-honours students. The program suits students interested in humanities scholarship who also want access to internship or exchange experience, and it draws on facilities such as the Bertrand Russell Archive, concert halls, studios, and a theatre at McMaster University's Hamilton campus.
