MA/MS in Social Work (MSW)

The Master of Social Work (MSW) at McMaster University is offered through two specializations. The Critical Analysis of Social Work stream develops knowledge and skills for critically analyzing social work practice and social policy, examining how social problems are framed and how responses to them are conceptualized and implemented; it is offered on a thesis or course-based basis and takes 1 year to 18 months full-time or 2 to 3 years part-time. The Critical Leadership in Social Services and Communities stream builds conceptual, theoretical and analytical skills for leadership in the community and social service sectors and requires applicants to have experience working in social services or community organizations; it is practicum- and course-based, taking 1 year full-time or 3 years part-time. Admission to either stream requires a Bachelor of Social Work degree from an accredited social work program. The program does not focus on clinical skill development. Typical entry is September.
