Program details

Overview

McMaster's Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is a three-year degree, run over eleven months per year, that is not open to applicants straight from secondary school and requires at least three years of undergraduate education beforehand. Teaching follows the COMPASS problem-based learning curriculum, with small tutorial groups as the primary learning setting, supplemented by lectures for synthesis and context, and progress evaluated continuously by tutors, peers, and self-assessment. The program covers the biological, psychological, and social mechanisms of health and disease, with early and continuous patient exposure and an emphasis on clinical problem-solving in community and ambulatory-care settings alongside hospital-based training. Clinical training takes place across the McMaster University Medical Centre, several Hamilton-area hospitals, and community health-care centres, with additional placement opportunities in northern Canadian and international settings; the page notes the program has expanded through regional campuses. The program suits students who have completed prior undergraduate study and are seeking clinical medical training that begins with early patient contact, and it is based at McMaster University's Hamilton campus with placements across the region.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Admission to the DeGroote School of Medicine's MD programme is not available to secondary school applicants; official admission policy is published on the Undergraduate Medical Education site rather than the programme's future-students page. There are four absolute eligibility requirements: completion of at least three years of undergraduate study, 30 half-year or 15 full-year credits or a combination, by May of the entry year, with no prerequisite courses or preferred degree required; a GPA of at least 3.00 on the OMSAS 4.00 scale, drawn from the final-year or relevant transcript; an MCAT CARS section score of at least 123, with other MCAT sections not used in selection and the test written within five years of application; and completion of the Casper situational-judgment test, including its video component, but not the Duet component. Meeting these thresholds does not guarantee an offer, since admission is highly competitive for the roughly 217 available seats each year.

Application Details

Application Deadline: McMaster admits Level I students for September entry only. For Fall 2027, deadlines are set per programme: competitive programmes such as Engineering, Computer Science, Health Sciences, Midwifery, iBioMed and Honours Integrated Science close 15 January 2027, while most other Level I programmes (Business, Humanities I, the Life Sciences and Social Sciences gateways) stay open to 1 April 2027, often with an earlier 1 February 2027 'Equal Consideration' review point. These dates are identical for domestic and international applicants for nearly every programme; the sole exception is Nursing, where Ontario high-school applicants close 15 January 2027 and all other applicants, international included, close 1 February 2027. No programme is described as rolling beyond its published deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
