Program details

Overview

Computer Science at Memorial University is offered as a four-year major within either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree on the St. John's campus. The program addresses the theoretical foundations of information and computation alongside the practical techniques used to implement and apply them, with electives allowing students to explore areas such as artificial intelligence, data-centric computing, theory of computation, and visual computing and games. An honours option is available, as are joint programs combining Computer Science with applied mathematics, economics, physics, pure mathematics, or statistics. Rather than declaring the major on admission, students first complete introductory programming, logic, and mathematics coursework before applying to the program competitively. A co-operative internship option lets students take a paid work placement between academic terms to gain workplace experience alongside their studies. The program suits students interested in software development, systems design, artificial intelligence, game development, or related computing fields, and is designed to accommodate both those entering with prior programming experience and complete beginners.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 65.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Computer Science cannot be chosen as a major at the time of application: students first enter Memorial's Faculty of Science under the university's general admission requirements (a B.Sc. route additionally needs appropriate mathematics courses and a laboratory science; students without one should apply BA instead). Entry to the major itself is competitive and selective, based on cumulative average and recent course performance, with no fixed average guaranteeing a seat; the stated floor is 24 completed credit hours (8 courses) including Computer Science 1001 and 1002 with a minimum of 65% in both, six credit hours of critical reading and writing (at least three in English), and Mathematics 1000 or 1006 plus one of Mathematics 1001, 1090, 2000 or 2050. Major applications close May 31 (Fall entry) and August 31 (Winter entry). No program-specific English test scores are published; applicants whose first language is not English follow Memorial's general proficiency requirements (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall).

Application Details

Start Date: September, January and May
Application Deadline: Memorial University's undergraduate application system opens one year ahead of each semester for the 2027 cycle: for Fall 2027 entry the portal opens 10 September 2026, the priority deadline (also the early-entrance-scholarship deadline) is 1 March 2027, the document deadline is 20 August 2027, and applications finally close 9 September 2027; Winter 2027 entry has a priority deadline of 1 October 2026 and closes 6 January 2027; Spring 2027 entry closes 11 May 2027 with a priority date of 1 February 2027. International applicants use the same direct application to Memorial and are only advised to apply at least 12 weeks before their intended semester starts; no fixed international closing date is published. Late domestic applications are still considered as time, resources and space permit, so admission is effectively rolling past the priority date up to the final close. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
